What Does a Week in Club Volleyball Actually Look Like?

Before you commit a season to club volleyball, it helps to see the actual week, not just the season-long overview. Here’s a realistic breakdown.

The typical weekly rhythm. Most club seasons run on a two-practice-a-week schedule, with league or tournament play on select weekends throughout the season. At Team Illinois Volleyball, practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30–8:30pm, at the Wood Dale Park District. Tuesday practice is skill work: ball control, positional training, serving and passing reps. Thursday practice is team systems: running plays as a unit, scrimmage situations, game-speed reps. Select weekends bring Chicago Volleyball League play dates: eight across the season, December through mid-March. That’s it. No daily practices, no year-round demand: a season built to fit around school and family life, not take it over.

What a practice night actually involves for parents. Drop-off, two hours, pickup. Some parents stay and watch; others use the two hours to run errands or handle other kids’ schedules. Either works.

What a league play date looks like. League dates are the payoff for the two weekly practices: a chance to compete against other regional club teams. These are typically single-day events, not multi-day tournament travel, which keeps the season manageable for families balancing other commitments.

How the season builds over time. Early season, December, is foundation-building: fundamentals, positional cross-training, team chemistry. Mid-season, January through February, is where systems tighten and league play ramps up. Late season, March, is the competitive peak, closing out league play with a team that’s grown together for three months.

What this actually costs your family in time. Two weeknights, roughly two hours each, plus select weekend league dates, December through mid-March. It’s a real commitment, but a contained one, not an open-ended, year-round demand on your family’s calendar.

Why the schedule is built this way. A two-practice week with weekend league play, rather than daily practices or heavy travel, keeps volleyball as one part of a full life: room for school, other activities, family time, and rest. That balance is part of what keeps girls loving the sport through the whole season instead of running out of gas by February.
